We usually think of diabetes as a life-long condition. In certain situations, diabetes can be “cured” for at least for a period of time. This is more possible when someone is newly or recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, especially after dramatic weight loss or after bariatric surgery.
Even without being cured, losing weight if you’re overweight is a powerful way to help control your blood sugars. Old fashioned diet and exercise to lose weight is always most important. There are also medications available to help people with diabetes lose weight. Ask your provider if these are good for you. Ask if your health care setting has a specialty clinic or program to help with losing weight.
